Jesus is Enough

I was recently reading through the gospel account of John, and was struck by a short exchange found in Chapter 14.

On the night that Jesus was arrested, one of his disciples, named Philip, asked him, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus replied to his disciple, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”

Many of us are believing that we need something else in addition to Jesus: another sign, a new revelation, an additional blessing, and then, at last, we will know the face of God.

Hebrews 1:3 declares of Jesus that “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.”

To look upon the face of Jesus is to see the face of God.

Philip already had all that he needed standing right in front of him.

Jesus was enough then, and Jesus is enough now.

My sin remained a dirty stain
My good could not erase,
Then Jesus came, my sin He claimed
And cleansed me by His grace.

To Christ I fly! On Him rely!
His grace is all I need.
Unmoved by doubts, my faith cries out,
”Christ is enough for me!”
